Sleep and recovery
Practical sleep guidance for training and competition, including what young athletes need, the habits that help, and how coaches can protect recovery time.
Sleep & recovery
Aquatic sport and early mornings go together, and sleep is usually what pays for it. A 5am alarm, school or work, an evening session, then homework: something gives, and it is rarely the training.
The Australian Institute of Sport has gathered its sleep guidance in one place. It is written for athletes, coaches and support staff, and it treats sleep as part of training, not as what is left over once training is done.
What to expect
A topic page with two short videos and six guides you can download, including material on what young athletes need and how to build better sleep habits around a training week. It is free, with no sign-in. The source is Australian, and the principles carry over to athletes here.
Good to know
The guides are education for healthy athletes. Sleep that stays difficult for weeks despite good habits is a health question, and one for a GP or another qualified professional.
