Create culturally responsive experiences

Te Whetū Rehua is a Māori-developed framework for reflecting on your programme and how identity, relationships and place shape participation and wellbeing.

Inclusion & belonging

Resource

Te Whetū Rehua is a framework developed by Māori for thinking about how Māori participate in sport and recreation as Māori. It looks at who is involved, where it happens, and whether the language, relationships and values in the room reflect te ao Māori.

For a club or programme it is a way to look honestly at what you offer, and to see inclusion as something built through relationships, not a list to tick off.

What to expect

A short introduction on Sport New Zealand's site and a one-page visual of the framework as a PDF. Free, no sign-in.

Good to know

Use it alongside real relationships with local Māori, never instead of them. It was created for a particular programme, He Oranga Poutama, and it is not a certificate of cultural competence.
