Support someone who is struggling

How to listen without judging, offer practical help and support someone towards professional care, while looking after yourself too.

You do not need training to help someone who is having a hard time. Mostly you need to listen properly, stay alongside them, and know where to point when it is more than you can carry.

The Mental Health Foundation's guide covers those three things in plain terms: how to listen without judging, what practical support looks like, and how to help someone reach professional care. It also covers the part people forget, which is looking after yourself while you do it.

Good to know

Your part is to listen and help them find support, not to diagnose or fix things. Be honest that you cannot promise to keep something secret if their safety is at risk.
